Penon Blanco Lookout is named for the fire lookout of the same name which was built on the highest peak in the area projecting a majestic brown quartz outcrop marveled by John Muir. Located about 3 miles (as the crow flies) west of the old gold mining town of Coulterville, which is just 31 miles from Yosemite. The inn is built on a 200 acre working cattle ranch that was once used as a resting place for cowboys and their horses on cattle runs.

Today there are still two cattle runs per year. One in May driving the cattle to the high country for the summer, and one in October when they return to the valley. Often times we have guests on those days and it is quite a treat for them to see a truly Western event just as it was done 150 years ago.

Penon Blanco Lookout offers travelers romantic casual luxury. Guests can gather on the lake view patio in summer or before the cozy fire in winter with a glass of wine from our fine extensive selection. At days end guests relax in the spa beneath the sparkling crystal clear stars above. Many shooting stars can be seen and the Milky Way is directly overhead.

For the hiker, we offer a two mile hike to the original and historic Penon Blanco Fire Lookout accompanied by our two dogs: Chief and Tess. From there guests can explore a cave once occupied as a hideout by the famed outlaw Joaquin Murrietta himself.

In the morning when the guests smell the coffee and tea brewing,
their appetites grow, and they are ready to sit down to a gourmet
champagne, multi- course candlelight breakfast (more like brunch). For those who prefer herb tea, we grow our own herbs.

Guests may choose to be served outside on the parlor deck while taking in the remarkable views or dine in our elegant candlelit dining area. For Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, your four
night stay includes a holiday feast in addition to the usual great amenities.
